in the united states senate. so a friend of mine -- a friend of his told me yesterday that barney's active lobbying for the job may have hurt him. >> oh, that was clearly the first of the reasons. i don't know behind the scenes he may have given a tongue lashing to the governor behind closed doors. >> bill: right. is cowen saying that -- it's clear he is not going to run, right? >> that was one of the prerequisites that the governor laid down on the job, and cowen is very loyal to him. >> bill: so we know ed marky at least at this point is in. what is scott brown going to do? governor or senator? >> well there's scott brown and then really nobody else. >> bill: yeah. >> he's weighing his options. he has been around talking in the private sector see what he could get in terms of salary and deals. he has been through two very tough campaigns in the last several years. he faces another tough campaign here, and when he finishes this campaign in june he has to roll into 2014 where they are going to try to go at him again if he were to win for a full term. that's when kerry's t

respect the prerogatives of the united states senate and the members of congress, you represent the american people, you're the other branch of government, you have the right to know what took place. and i have an obligation commensurate with the, you know, regulations and classifications and privacy and other things at play here, to help you get the answers and we'll do that. i hope we can do it in a noncontentious, appropriate way. >> thank you. could i just mention, i think you would aee with me that every day that goes by in syria, it gets worse. so there is, it seems to me, a very strong impetus that we realize that the present policy is not succeeding and to look at other options to prevent what is going on for now 22 months and 60,000 dead. >> but i think you would agree with me that whatever judgments you make, they have to pass the test of whether or not, you do them, they're actually going to make things better. >> absolutely. >> you have to make a test of the cost analysis in doing that. and i mean all kinds of cos. human life costs, treasure, effect on other countrie

was ahead of the curve of almost every politician i know in the united states senate and congress, when he offered the iranian freedom and security act. the syrian accountability act. those were not just since things have percolateed in the arab spring. those were well in advance. he knows more about the interactions between mahmoud ahmadinejad and chavez than any of our politician. so in terms of who or enemy is and where the war is being fought, he was at the first one to use the term islamo fascist. but he was told he can't use the term. in christianity we have people who handle snakes and speak in tongues and people who might show up on easter and christmas. that whole realm of christianity is the same in islam. the simon wiesenthal in l.a. -- received an award for holding a conference in indonesia that brought imams and survivors from the holocaust, and it was on the newspaper, if my friend ahmadinejad says the holocaust didn't exist, i call him a liar. so you can look at the friends of america who are muslims and you look at the enemy who are trying to take the united states and repl

the united states senate. this would start in the senate, not in the house. there were four democrats and four republicans. the democrats led by chuck schumer include bob menendez from new jersey, dick durbin from illinois and michael bennett from colorado, on. on the republican side led by john mccain, including they include lindsey graham because john mccain can't do anything without lindsey graham alongside of him. they also include marco rubio from florida and geoff flake, the other senate from arizonaother senate from arizona. democrats insisted any immigration reform bill had to include a path to citizenship. had to do something about these 11 million people estimated, i think it's higher than that, who had been here, came here illegally, have lived here a long time had their families have jobs, have houses have kids in school. some have kids in the military belong to local churches members of the community, had to do something being them and allow -- give them a path to staying here permanently as american citizenship. democrats always insisted on

rights in the united states senate. and in fact, i'm told by sources close to both senators that schumer is holding off on releasing his legislation, because he's making changes in the hopes of having a bipartisan bill with tom coburn, strictly on the issue of strength streng background checks. >> thanks very much for that report, dana. kate balduan joining us in "the situation room" as well. there's a lot of movement on this story. >> a lot of movement, a lot of conversations happening, at least, on this issue. and gabby giffords, and her husband, right after the hearing that dana bash was telling us about, she and her husband, mark kelly, they met with president obama at the white house, and the white house sent out this photo of them talking in the oval office. they were talking about, as he told you, the issue of gun control. >> and right after that meeting at the white house, mark kelly came here to "the situation room" and joined me. first of all, let's talk about your wife. how did she prepare for that? because that's really the first time we heard her speak like that over these p

of openly-gay members of congress and openly-gay united states senator and a president who stands up for lgbt rights. [applause] as democrats, our party will proudly continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our lgbt brothers and sisters as we continue this fight. as democrats we are proud that our party truly reflects the diversity of america. we should also be proud that our party made a commitment to insure that our diverse orty is reflected in our day-to-day o operations. by the way, it is no coincidence that this cycle we hired -- [inaudible] and exceeded our one-third diversity spend goal at the democratic national convention. and we have a president who leads the way. i could not have been more proud of our president more yesterday, particularly when he so eloquently reminded us that as americans our journey is not complete until it's complete for everyone. remember when he said our journey is not complete until our wyoming withs, our mothers and daughters can earn a living equal to their effort, our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like

hope is that as the president and his advisors look at the united states senate, they see, number one, a willingness to solve a problem of fixing the debt in a bipartisan way. i get the feeling they don't believe that about us. i don't know what else we can do to cause them to believe that. there is not the same kind of comfortable relationship back and forth that there should be. i've heard some people say well, the johnson-dirksen days, that was ancient history. that is ancient history. that was a long time ago. but madam president, human nature doesn't change. human nature doesn't change. not in 50 years, not in 100 years, not in 500 years. and there is plenty of goodwill here across the aisle, on this side of the aisle, at the beginning of this term, to work with a newly inaugurated president to say mr. president, we're ready to fix the debt, provide us the leadership, no great crisis is ever solved without presidential leadership in the united states, and you're the president, you're the only one who can lay out the plan. then we'll consider it, we'll amend it, we'll argue about

attention this week in a bipartisan group of senators is ready to unveil its new plan. the so-called group of eight unveiled today include the pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants now in the united states. the lawmakers also want enhanced border security. the president's plan is introduced tomorrow. >>> undocumented immigrants can now apply for a driver's license in illinois. governor pat quinn signed the new law into effect yesterday. in order to get a license, immigrants could have to take a driving test and carry car insurance. illinois is the fourth and most populous state to issue licenses to the illegal immigrants. there's illinois, new mexico, washington state and in utah, you can get a driver's permit. >> that's interesting. there's definitely some headway on this issue. the plan that will be revealed, it's a broad stroke plan. they're hammering out the details, including the pathway to citizen, how much time it would take. so they're still working through the details. that's where always the devil is. but based on the last election, that's why immigration is such a h
